Tips for resolving problems sending email in Outlook

After you have confirmed that the email address you are trying to send to is correct and you are still experiencing problems sending to that address while using Outlook, try one or more of the tips below. Some of these actions are not possible for Google accounts unless they're configured as IMAP connections.


Remove a problematic and/or unwanted address from appearing when addressing an email:

  1. Start typing the address in the To field until auto-complete pops up with the address
  2. Click on the “X” next to the address in the pop-up or highlight the address and press the delete key on your keyboard

If you get a non-delivery error after using auto-complete for someone on campus, do the above. Then type their first or last name and click on Check Names before sending.


Set the Address Book to automatically search the Global Address list (GAL) instead of Contacts:

  1. Click on the Home tab, then click on Address Book in the Find section of the ribbon (Ctrl+Shift+B)
  2. In the Tools menu, click on Options
  3. Select Start with Global Address List
  4. Click OK and then close the Address Book window


Download a new copy of the Offline Address Book:

  1. Click on the File tab
  2. Click on Account Settings
  3. Select Download Address Book
  4. Click OK


Repair or re-create your account settings:

  1. Click on the File tab
  2. Click on Account Settings, and then click on Account Settings.
  3. In the Account Settings dialog box, on the E-mail tab, select your account, and then click on Repair. Follow any prompts from the repair wizard.
  4. When the repair is done, restart Outlook.
  5. To re-create your account settings, click on Remove instead of Repair then click on New to re-create your account settings.


Clear the Auto-Complete List:

WARNING: to re-train Auto-Complete, you will have to type the complete address, or use Check Names, for every address.

  1. Click on the File tab
  2. Click on Options
  3. Click on Mail
  4. Click on Empty Auto-Complete List


Configure settings on the Contacts page to sort and display entries according to your preference and for ease of use:

  1. Click on Contacts in Navigation pane at bottom left of the window
  2. Select desired display on the Home tab in the Current View section
  3. In the Phone or List view, you can rearrange columns using drag and drop
